One of my favorite things yesterday at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn was the Postcard Machine.
A woman sits inside this crafty little “postcard vending machine” with a microphone and speaks in very terse, robotic voice as you interact with it to get your postcard.
If you ask it a question like, “Do you give change?” it will answer you. (Yes, it does give change.)
You “feed” the money through the slot and the “machine” feeds your change back to you.
Then comes the fun part. Spin the dial and choose what kind of postcard you want. Someone after us let the machine pick the postcard, and the conversation following up to the postcards release went something like this:
POSTCARD MACHINE: Do you like hamburgers?
WOMAN: Yeah, I guess.
POSTCARD MACHINE: Do you like squirrels?
WOMAN: Sure.
POSTCARD MACHINE: Do you like whiskey?
WOMAN: Sure, yes.
POSTCARD MACHINE: Do you like whiskey more than squirrels?
WOMAN: Yes.
She got a postcard about whiskey.
But we just choose “Words of Wisdom” on the dial.
And thus we received our own handmade and sewn postcard about couches: “all love seats are couches but not all couches are love seats.” Good advice. We’ve had that problem before.
