A little ramble on food and fashion.

I’ve been shifting through old magazines and clipping pictures of foods that look pretty and yummy (making a little inspiration book), but, unfortunately, the recipes are often complicated and require lots of ingredients, some only available at specialty stores, so I decided to create my own special, pretty food.

It suddenly occurred to me that making meals is a lot like putting together an outfit. You add and subtract until it all “matches.” Often, you need a central piece or idea that holds the concept together, and “food porn” — ie pretty pictures in cooking magazines and the like — is a good way to jumpstart your brain into creating a new and exciting dish, the same way fashion magazines don’t suggest you go out and buy that $500 Marc Jacobs top, but that you find a few things in your wardrobe that can be put together in a similar way.

So, when I went to the store today I decided to see what I could make with a few items I found on Manager’s Special (crushed box or almost to the sell by date). In the end, I created this little sandwich out of Potato Focacia bread, light Havarti cheese, a touch of pesto and almonds, and a few slices of pear. Simple, cheap, and super yummy!

Yes, I am more of an expert in the field of fashion than that of food, but I thought it was interesting to make a little something with fashion in mind. Like with everything — fashion, food, and in between — it will always be the details that make or break perfection — the wrong earring, necklace, hair-pin can keep a good outfit just good or a change a good outfit to perfect. In the same way, a pinch of cinnamon or salt — too much or too little — can turn an A- into an A+ or keep an A- right where it is.

As always, I have an affinity for those things which one might imagine don’t quite go (and those things that are on sale), but somehow work together to create something unique and wonderful.

And that’s what I have to say about that.
