Yasmine, illustrator & owner of the blog A Print a Day (see previous post for more info), has, thus far, had an incredibly interesting life. Here’s the short version.

She grew up in Manila (in the Philippines) and seemed to immediately take to the artistic world. She feasted on comic books (wait until you see the next post about this!) and then took to doodling all over her parents’ work. She’d draw imaginary mansion-treehouses over her dad’s old architectural blueprints and she’d sketch on the animations her mom drew for The Flintstones & Jem and the Holograms (almost reading my mind, Yasmine confirmed, “I had an awesome childhood.”)

At school, Yasmine began studying geology to become a volcanologist and seismologist (really!), but then switched to animation (yay!). Now, she works full-time as a designer and illustrator. “I work primarily with the juvenile market designing accessories,” says Yasmine. “I also sell prints and placements for several fashion brands and gift markets.” Although she didn’t want to give away the *exact* places she’s working now, she did reveal that she worked for Lisa Frank for two and a half years. As soon as I heard this, I imagined all of the free folders and pens and pencils she probably received, full of bright colors and adorable animals and featuring her OWN ARTWORK. Wow. Sigh.

Yasmine has lived all over the world, but she currently spends most of her time in San Fransisco, California and Phoenix, Arizona, where she and her husband own a foundry (no, the cool things really just don’t stop coming). Her husband is a bronze sculptor and one of her hugest inspirations. She also has cats, about a billion pairs of shoes (”I could wear a feed sack for all I care. But I like having fabulous shoes. I think I have about close to 300 pairs. I’ve even made my own shoes.”), and loves cream puffs (”It stems from my childhood,” says Yasmine, “reading that Little Archie issue where Betty buys Archie’s affection with cream puffs, yet Veronica always manages to steal him away. Sad but true.”)

And, of course, Yasmine has her blog A Print A Day, which, until now, I had imagined to be the center of her life! Lucky for us, she keeps it well-stocked and updated, and her prints give us a little glimpse into her life (as you’ll see in Part III).

Later today = Part III (my favorite part!). This will be posted on the main page, or you’ll be able to view all parts of the interview here.
