If you read blogs, there is a medium to high chance that you have some nerd-qualities, which is why I thought you might like a report on Nerd Nite Nerdtacular, one of several Nerd Nite (motto: be there and be square) events that happen at bars in Boston and NYC. (If you aren’t a nerd, you will still dig the bar where this Nerd Nite took place!) Nerd Nite is either free or has a very small cover-charge (last night: $5).
Basically, Nerd Nite consists of a bunch of people interested in Nerdy stuff getting together at a bar and listening to some short, entertaining lectures on a variety of topics (see this New York Times for more info). Saturday’s topics included: Everything You wanted to Know about Birds (and some things you didn’t), What to Expect when we’re Exploding: Different Religions Beliefs about the End-Times (given by daily show writer Rob Kutner, author of Apocalypse How), and The Neurobiology of Zombies Part II (about parasites). I got to see some wacky bird mating dances and a spiral-shaped duck penis, and that was just in the first lecture!
The event was held at the Galapagos Art Space (and bar!) in DUMBO, Brooklyn (DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Overpass, and is located right next to (and some of it under) the Brooklyn Bridge). It’s a cute, small, hip area right next the water, with nice restaurant (see coming post), bars, shops, and half-pavement, half-cobblestone streets.
Apparently, Galapagos was previously opened in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (the most hipster place you will ever go), but then moved over to DUMBO due to increased rent in Williamsburg. It is opening in DUMBO this week.
“The new Galapagos features an 1,800 sq ft indoor lake which makes its old reflecting pool in Williamsburg look as big as an ascaris lumbricoides (yes, human parasite analogies never go out of style).” — Nerd Nite web-page
The coolest thing about the Galapagos Art Space is its hip, red couches are on platforms surrounded by actual water! (Apparently, the DJ didn’t know this and got wet up to his knees!) There is also a kind of mezzanine for those who want more godly seating.
