even the ones that are publicly declared as cute. My hatred stems from many negative experiences with birds. After a bird-poop-on-head incident three years ago, I cower whenever a pigeon gets within five feet of me. Every time a pigeon disturbs my space, I contort my face in unsightly ways, and scurry towards the other direction. My mother also cared for a ridiculous number of birds, which always smelled incredibly foul. The bird odors did not dissipate until a raccoon mama and two raccoon babies got into the cages, and murdered the trapped birds. Blood. Bath.
Despite my hatred towards birds, I seem to enjoy bird OBJECTS.
RECENT BIRD-THEMED ACTIVITIES IN THE LIFE OF TRICIA:
Inspired by my recent behavior, up-up-up above are bird objects that I, a bird hater, enjoy.
1. Poetic Home is one of my favorite blogs. Run by Grace Light, a photo stylist (!), Poetic Home features perfect vintage and vintage-inspired treasures that all have a twinkle of grandeur. (Grace has impeccable taste! Look at her antique library card catalog!) In January, she suggested turning old bird cages into lamps (GO LOOK!) The birdcage curtain is as adorable as baby bunnies. Frolicking in a meadow. With chicks and tulips.
2. Good Morning! Vintage Bird Hairpins from Hella Good, $6
3. A CAST-IRON bird bottle opener. What a whimsical way to open a 40. I keed… Wonder Wings Bottle Opener, $9.99
4. For some reason, this cute bird reminds me of an old man who buys a ridiculous car…like a ferrari (I know nothing about cars), just to feel young again. Apologies, I have a weird little mind. barkingbirdart’s Etsy shop is adorable, and full with limited edition (numbered!) prints. Bird Dressed As A Superhero print from barkingbirdart’s Etsy, $18
5. I want to be best friends with ohhellofriend. First, my default phrase when I see a friend is…”hello friend.” Cosmic? Serendipitous? “FORESHADOWFORESHADOWFORESHADOW!!(?) I can imagine our (me and ohhelofriend) meeting; we would both say “hello, friend,” AT THE SAME TIME. Second, she runs one of my favorite (no HYPERBOLE here). Third, her blog is glorious. owl stud earrings from ohhellofriend’s Etsy, $3.50 (I would get these myself, but my ears not pierced. I am afraid of pain. Womp womp.)
6. Early Bird Sugar dispenser from Anthropologie, $14. There is also a matching birdie that doles creamer, but no thank you. I drink my coffee black. It reflects my soul.
7. Owl Warm and Cozy Mug, $15.99
8. My friend, Angelica, frequently wears a really lovely felt bird pin, and I’ve always wanted one for myself. These pins come in three colors, which translates to three different ways you can present yourself to the world. “I’m feeling romantically delusional today, I will wear my red bird pin.” Little Bird Pins from Threekeys’ Etsy, $3
*For the purposes of this post, “birds” = “the (prolonged) flyers of the aves class.” I support penguins.

I love this! First of all, I love how the images are in a little vintagey notebook. Second, the headband is great! They cost like $100 every time you see them in the store. Finally, I never any feelings whatsoever about birds (except that parakeet I owned circa fourth grade), but now — in a strange feat considering the post title — I seem to like them.
Thanks! I’ve always wanted a peacock feather headband, but whenever I see one for sale, the feathers are always chopped off! And I like my peacock feathers un-chopped! So I made one myself. If there is any interest, I could make a tutorial. But, they’re really easy to make.
Anthropologie is like an aviary. I swear! In at least every 10 steps you take, you will find something, dress, skirt, blouse, notebook, hair piece, jewelry, dinnerware, oven mits etc., that is bird-themed, but I like it. Like you Trish, I don’t support live birds (since I too have been pooped on several times), but I do enjoy bird decor!
Note on wings bottle opener: I hear they don’t really work! Blasphemy!
Second note: This post is very appropriate because on Tuesday I got a compliment from a random stranger on the train about my felt bird pin! It was quite nice, especially because I paid way too much for that little vintage pin!
Thirdly: The owl mug is perfect for an itsy-bitsy cup of tea. Tea party time! And the tea pot comes with a strainer for loose-leaf tea!
Question: You support penguins, but how do you feel about owls?
bird poop= good luck
It’s true! Anthropologie is full of birds! How cosmic! What a nice stranger.
I like owls more than pidgeons, but they are still able to poop on me.
And yes, I’ve heard bird poop is good luck. But when it happens outside a Starbucks on my hair/cheek/velvet blazer, it is depressing.
What a beautiful collage! I love the notebook you created, as well as your splendid aviary picks. I really like the bird bottle opener and hope that it does indeed work.
I am also so inspired now to go about and create a peacock headband modeled after your lovely creation. And it’s so funny about the birdcage necklace because a few months ago I saw a waitress wearing one and asked her where she bought it!
Thank you so much for your kindest words about my blog :) I’m very happy to explore yours and look forward to visiting with you often!
i have that birdcage necklace too! Its like my favorite thing ever. I just found you’re blog and i looove it by the way!
I COULDN’T AGREE MORE! Nasty things… or did CU just make me paranoid about West Nile? Also, I have a Xmas ornament that looks like your birdcage necklace that’s like 20 years old, vintage!
Thanks Grace! The peacock headband was really easy to make. Just remember to use very little glue, and to spread it VERY THINLY. Otherwise, you will ruin the feathers.
I’m glad you found us, mallory!
JES- WEST NILE- WTF?!
I need that necklace! NEED it! Too bad there aren’t any H&M’s in this city…
and peacocks, do they poop? ha ha. i’ve never seen peacock poo, although i have seen live peacocks in ithaca! like you say trish, WTF – PEACOCKS & WEST NILE!
p.s. i’m feeling ill. this comment may have made no sense!
My barista wanted my necklace and it is weird- I scoured other H&Ms in NYC and Chicago, but ultimately could only find it at the H&M I got mine at. I guess that’s a problem with fast fashion.
EVERYONE poops. Apparently peacocks like to poop a lot in Florida. http://activerain.com/blogsview/253047/Can-Peacock-Poop-Kill-A-Real-Estate-Deal

I saw the 4 minute something tutorial – but that one is with “ready made” feathers – how did you get all the peacock feathers to stay in one place ie where you put them?
I have a fancy party to go to – we have to wear hats – I wanna make me a peackock headband…
Also where to finf peacock feathers in Joburg South Africa
AnneSA-I used thin layers of super glue
Maybe try looking on ebay or etsy for peacock feathers?
