At the moment. I’m sick of green. A kryptonite river. Harassment by trashy green tourists that walk at a snail’s pace. The burgeoning green grass of the Great Lawn at Millennium Park (YES, I AM A HATER. I have allergies.). Despite these negative green-laced events, green is one of my favorite colors, and frames five things that I am currently obsessed with.
1. Stickers and Donuts loves Maira Kalman. Featured in the NY Times this past Friday, The Robin Hood Foundation has renovated libraries in 62 schools throughout NYC. With the aid of Pentagram, a global design firm, the project commissioned several established artists (Maira Kalman, Cristoph Niemann, Stefan Sagmeister, Yuko Shimizu) to create murals for the libraries. I encourage you to flip through the slide show in the NY Times article, because the murals are amazing! Below is a picture from Cristoph Niemann’s mural. THE DINOSAUR’S TEETH ARE BOOKS!!@#@!#@!:

2. As my last post mentioned, I traded Chicago for NYC a few weeks ago. I had many new experiences (befriended a synthesizer-playing scientologist..which I THOUGHT WAS A NORMAL NYC THING, but after consulting with various natives, apparently it is an anomaly, went to the American Museum of Natural History and Babycakes…), and I notably visited Uniqlo for the first time! Chicago is imperfect in many ways, and here’s another complaint: There is no Uniqlo in Chicago.
Walking into Uniqlo is like sticking your head in a sanitary barrel of Runts. So many colors! All neatly stacked! I am convinced that Uniqlo is the best place to purchase excellent basics (and neat graffic t-shirts). I’m apathetic towards American Apparel: the sub-par quality clothes are overpriced, it often has questionable (borderline-costume-y) clothes, nothing fits me properly, and Don Charney disturbs me. Uniqlo has cheaper, better quality clothes, and they fit me! Also, if you purchase pants, they will tailor them within two hours for FREE! I returned to Chicago with half a suitcase full of Uniqlo purchases. (I reasoned that the sales tax is cheap in NY, and that THERE IS NO UNIQLO IN CHICAGO.)
3. Ira Glass, oh how I love thee. For me, Ira Glass falls in the “older male crushes of Tricia” category; a category which also includes Jarvis Cocker and Anderson Cooper. His voice is so melodious that when I listen to This American Life, I feel like a sorority girl listening to male a capella. I trudge through the voids between new episodes by catching up on the old episodes, which aired when I wasn’t yet cool enough to listen to the show. My current favorites: #328- What I Learned from Television (where Ira Glass gushes about being a die-hard OC fan, and his reaction to Seth and Summer’s conversation on This American Life) and #374- Somewhere Out There (full of unconventional love stories).
4. Whereas seemingly everyone was downtown getting drunk for St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, I went to Knee Deep Vintage, a store that I have wanted to go to since I returned to Chicago. Knee Deep Vintage is the best vintage/thrift store that I have ever been to. Located in wonderful Pilsen (even the manholes are glorious, and you can get both Mexican hot chocolate AND chilli lollipops), Knee Deep Vintage is full of treasures. The store’s great selection is reflective of the owners’ exceptional taste. Apparently, they go on adventures across the country to gather things for the store (source: nice stranger who spoke to me on the train). Everything is priced reasonably, well-organized, and neutral smelling. I bought one navy and white dress (pocket!), AND THE MOST MAGNIFICENT KELLY-GREEN BELT. It’s made of lots of metal plates that are sewn on an elastic band. It’s a little heavy, but if I ever get attacked, the belt will be an effective weapon!!!
5. Yesterday, Kitsune Noir featured the new movie poster for WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. I am very excited for the release (I do, after all, own a Where the Wild Things Are journal), however, scary kids movies (Coraline, good grief) traumatize me. I am determined to find someone willing to see the movie with me.

I am obsessed with ALL of the things you are a obsessed with.
Is that Kelly Green Belt on a Takhoon summer dress?!
Yesterday I commented on KN+ about the Wild Things poster — didn’t even know you were doing this post!
I went through a This American Life phase for a week and listened to tons of back episodes; my fave is when they are interviewing this drunk girl and she is like, “I know what you’re doing, by the way, because I’m a journalism major.”
I was so obsessed w/the book-teeth in that article, that I didn’t even see Kalman! So glad you pted it out!
FINALLY, Anderson Cooper is hot. Here are some fun (well, not fun) facts about him: (1) People think he’s gay and he doesn’t discuss his personal life (except that time on Oprah — that was a good episode). (2) He is the son of Gloria Vanderbilt. (3) He was a model ages 10-13. (4) His brother committed suicide when Anderson was in his early twenties and that is part of what promted him to become a journalist.
OH EM GEE! I hadn’t seen the movie poster for Where the Wild Things Are movie! Very excited! I may have to visit you in Chicago so we can watch it together. When is it set for release?!
How does Knee Deep compare to Cheap Jacks here in NYC?
Yes, the weapon-belt is on a thakoon target dress. I don’t think it’s sold anymore, but FYI- it fits funny and needs a belt.
Cosmic. Maurice Sendak is a really interesting character. I remember listening to a podcast…I forget it might of been some silly NPR thing or the New Yorker podcast about him, and my excitement level in anticipation to listening to the podcast was an embarassing level. I would consider going to Philadelphia, just to visit the Rosenbach museum.
I really liked how that artist integrated books into his mural- Mona Lisa’s smile as a book? Pretty cute.
I will have to find that This American Life episode. I wonder if they teach Ira Glass interview sensing skills in J school.
One of my favorite Anderson Cooper moments- when he races Michael Phelps in the pool. He was so slow, but his effort was endearing. I did not know his mother is Gloria Vanderbilt. My mom loves Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. Good grief.
OH EM GEE #2: PAUL DANO PLAYS ALEXANDER IN THE MOVIE!!! PAUL DANO WAS PERFECT IN LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE!
[this is my last comment, i promise.]

Reply: Angelica: There is this amazing book by E.L. Konisburg for children that is all about the Mona Lisa painting. It is funny and smart. I was reminded of it when you talked about integrating books and Mona Lisa smile artwork- Konisburg did it! Check it out!

The movie will be released October 2009. Here is some footage: http://www.worstpreviews.com/trailer.php?id=948&item=0 (the url is misleading, it is an interesting preview). I can’t find a link to the actual trailer, but apparently, it is set to Arcade Fire- “Wake Up” (Which I think is pretty neat.)
I didn’t know who Paul Dano was off the top of my head, so I had to IMDB THAT. You WOULD be a supporter of Paul Dano in Little Miss Sunshine. You should hang out in the village more, and perhaps you will run into him. Wikipedia reports that he goes to school there.
The E.L. Konisburg book looks great. I’ll have to investigate it later.
Oh and Knee Deep Vintage > Cheap Jacks. Although Knee Deep is not organized by era, it is organized by color. Also, my dress was $12 and the belt was $10. Cheap Jacks’ name is misleading: it is not cheap.
Where Have I Been?? I sink into a week’s worth of hard-core job-hunting and feel like I miss out on everything! They’re making a Wild Things MOVIE?? I’ll go see it w/you, Tricia! (and I liked Coraline…too bad they didn’t send S&D one of their mystery promo kits…)
I normally don’t comment on things regarding the store but I wanted to say thank you SO MUCH for all of your kind words about our store and I am beyond ecstatic that the green belt you got went to a good home, it is one of my most favorite finds ever. I find metal belts in that style all the time but I have never in my wildest dreams seen another green one like that.
Also, I’m with you on being bummed there is no UNIQLO here, that store is amazing. Every time I’m in NYC I stock up on socks and other things (argyle socks for $3/pair, a steal!), it’s worth the $15 bag check fee. I wish they would do online ordering…
nice roundup! :)
Lorraine- I saw one of the Coraline promo kits on notcot, and was very jealous!
Trent- What a great surprise. Thank YOU for the nicest belt I have ever owned. I am, at this very moment, wearing my belt AND uniqlo socks, so your comment is rather cosmic. I, too, own uniqlo argyle socks, and every time I pull on a pair, I suffer from separation anxiety and am overwhelmed with nostalgic uniqlo thoguhts.
Jessie- Thanks!!!
Driving from Rhode Island to Maryland today I listened to 7 episodes of This American Life. I am now completely caught up
:-)

I’ll have to remember to listen to This American Life on my next road trip, because that sounds magical (and exceptionally comforting if I drive through Indiana and Ohio).
true fact about cheap jacks. i went there today and spent $73 dollars on a skirt and sweater. :/ but i love both, so i guess it’s okay.
i think the actual trailer is on the apple trailer site… & did you realize karen o is doing the music?
it’s on the apple site now. i DID NOT know that karen o was doing the music. i’ve always found karen o to be freakishly intimidating, so this makes me more excited to see the movie.
Ira Glass obsession seems to be taking over the world. You were probably always cool enough to listen to the show, you just didn’t know it.
