I’m sorry for the lack of updates. I’M ALIVE-I MOVED-I DON’T HAVE INTERNET! Here’s a little something to appease your worried little souls.
My coworker, Patrick, gave the above creation to his girlfriend for Christmas. His official title for it is “Zen Rock Garden/Tatooine Playset.” I had heard about his plans to make the playset, but last week was the first time I saw it with my own over-sized eyes. The basin for his playset is a tray (like the type of tray that someone would bring you breakfast in bed with). Ingeniously, he cut a roll of tape in half, and glued them at the handles. Therefore, the playset is both PORTABLE and the SAND CANNOT ESCAPE! On the subject of Star Wars, HAVE YOU SEEN THESE STAR WARS LEGO SCENES? They’re great. (via frites & fries).
Thank goodness February is short! Rabbit, Rabbit!

Maria, this is the coolest thing I have ever seen. Also, it makes perfect sense!
Consider that George Lucas was heavily influenced by Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero with a Thousand Faces,” and his theory of comparitive mythology therein provices tacit support for an introspective Buddhism!
Interestingly, Campbell also was a scholar to some degree of James Joyce, and this Zen/Tatooine parallax is certainly a child of the Joycean ethic. An absurdity which would most clearly express it in the works to follow such as Beckett’s endgame and the postmodern children.
Hey look at my handiwork just showing up on your site Tricia! Also, it’s spelled “Tatooine” – Brian K. instinctively made this correction in his post.
The follow up to this was going to either be a Bansai Tree/Endor Battle playset or an Herb Garden/Endor Battle playset. While researching, I discovered that both would actually be pretty expensive AND labor intensive. That doesn’t mean I’m forgetting them entirely, just putting it on the back burner.
Also also also, this was a birthday present.
+ loveeee zen gardens. my fourth grade students would go bananas over this, especially.
yo brian, long time no see — that english nerd comment, true to form — party foul!!!!!! :)
