So, I know, we’ve been a bit MIA. But we are working on a new blogger or two and we are reassessing our lives and doing all that stuff that comes with the new year. And, I’ve been away from my personal computer for 2+ weeks. We aren’t back on track yet, but I can still promise you a little something new every week : ).
Anyway, here is a kind of Currently Obsessed for the YEAR. I tried to think back on all of my favorites of 2008.
Music: Joe Purdy’s Can’t Get it Right Today was played 60 times on my itunes alone, never mind my ipod which I use more frequently. You can listen to the song on his web-page by clicking on the You Can Tell Georgia CD, or you can go straight to YouTube. PS This song is perfect for Mondays, days on which I can’t seem to get anything right.
Purchase: Okay, so my real best purchase is my MacBook Pro, which replaced my five year old 40GB Dell Laptop. But my next best purchase, for approx $1998 less, was this frother from Ikea. After it, I came to love frothing things. Then I came to love coffee. It was a big spiral out of control. And now I have way too much air-intensified-milk and caffine.
Local Trip: My friend Misa and I went to the Flushing and the New York’s World Fair Grounds for a day. It’s right here in Queens, and I had so much fun visiting the dilapidated structures and wondering what they used to look like. Also, I LOVED the Panorama of NYC — amazing! You can re-live the adventure here on my blog.
Fashion Piece: These black high-heels from H&M. Hands down. They go with practically anything and don’t kill my feet. They’re still at H&Ms for about $25.
New Food: I love Purple Sticky Rice, so when I found RICE in Brooklyn (also has locations in Manhattan), I was so excited. Then I found this ridiculous meal with chicken, mushrooms, yogurt, and bananas, and I was completely intrigued — it sounded awful! But it didn’t! You can re-read all about my min-adventure at RICE here.
Holiday Project: Every year for Thanksgiving, my family has a contest where you make a turkey out of a paper bag. Sadly, my turkey did not win this year, but the Sarah Palin turkey, shown above, did win, and it’s so easy to see why. How my cousins managed to make a turkey look like Palin, I will never know, but great job, isn’t it?
Book: So, it’s a little embarrassing, but my very first post was about the various book covers of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Micahel Chabon. But how could I help it — back in April I was even MORE obsessed with the book. Usually I hate books that I would describe as “fun,” but this book is “fun” and more than fun. Just read it. No description would do it justice.
Freebie: I love the Poladroid, which turns any photo into a Polaroid. If you can believe it, I was LOOKING for this exact item — not just a program that put a bumpy white edge around my picture, but actually changed the color balance so it looked vintage. (Next year my favorite freebie is sure to be Picasa for Macs — FINALLY RELEASED!)
Be sure to let me know if you have any favorites of 2008!
Note: The type used in this post is *free* from this fabulous site, which Tricia recently featured in a short post.

Yesterday, I introduced you to Rhiannon, exposed her tepid feelings towards being compared to Rhianna, and hopefully convinced you why I am currently (always?) obsessed with everything Liebemarlene. We’ve reached the end, and I would now like to share with you some of the things that Rhiannon is currently obsessed with. And because I couldn’t resist, I’ve also included some of my own comments. In the guillemets. Why guillemets? I’ve always wanted an excuse to type “guillemets.” GUILLEMETS, GUILLEMETS, GUILLEMETS!
1. Lillian Gish
2. Reading about the Great Depression «The photo above is by Dorothea Lange, a wonderful photographer who took amazing photographs that encapsulated the consequences of the Great Depression.»
3. Apple Cider
4. 1940s Christmas films
5. Long necklaces
6. Velvet
7. Peter Pan collars «Psst! Esty and eBay are great places to find lacey peter pan collars.»
8. Coupon code sites «Now, more than ever, a lot of newspapers have been publishing many articles on ways to save. They almost always include coupon code sites, like RetailMeNot. If you’re planning to purchase something from a pretty big website, it’s a smart idea to check a website like RetailMeNot first. You could save quite a lot!»
9. 1920s hats now that my hair is short
10. Finding ways to antagonize my brother-in-law, Danny the Antagonizer
11. Finding ways to antagonize the jocks next door
12. 1970s Edwardian style
14. Vintage knitting patterns «A neat resource for vintage knitting patterns is Vintage Pattern House’s Etsy store. Not a knitter? Brighter Fusion’s Etsy store is full of vintage sewing patterns!»
Tricia’s Notes (!) & Picture Credits
The font is “Jane Austen” (swoon), which is downloadable at dafont.com. Except when noted, all images were taken from Liebemarlene Vintage Look Book. Vintage knitting pattern from Vintage Pattern House. Also of note! I didn’t make the fancy frame adorning the picture of Rhiannon! It was her boyfriend, Kumar! I can’t emphasize enough, I hope to one day have photo editing skills as tight as his.
I love mail. Especially, you know, those days when YOUR-OFFICE-COFFEE-MUG-THAT-YOU-HAD-TO-USE-SINCE-YOU-FORGOT-TO-WASH-YOUR-TIGHT-MUG-TIPS-OVER-IN-YOUR-BAG-AND-RUINS-YOUR-RECENTLY (5 MINUTES PRIOR)-OBTAINED-NEW-YORKER-RESULTING-IN-A-PUCKERED-MESS. Those days.
Then, you receive a wondrous package full of marvelous treasures. Which leads to a (non) ostentatious yelp: “SCORE! I’M LOVED!” As a result, everything seems right in the world again. At least for the next five minutes, before the euphoria wears off.
1. Sneakers! I’m grateful to be in a situation where I am both debt free, and have no major expenses (babies, mortgage). This is how I rationalize owning four (now five) pairs of sneakers. I have always wanted metallic shoes; The origins of this desire are dubious. I do, however, like shiny things. I wanted metallic shoes so badly, that I even considered purchasing my first pair of Converse. Only the metallic silver. Ultimately I vetoed that idea, because I refuse to spend $70 on Converse.
I first found out about TOMS a couple of years ago, and since then, I toyed with the idea of getting a pair. After all, for every pair of TOMS purchased, a needy child gets a pair of TOMS. This is documented on YouTube HERE. FURTHERMORE, I wear Vans because I am lazy, and TOMS are also shoelace-less. THEN, I found out that TOMS come in GLITTER. After consulting with a few people, I ended up choosing the gold. And I got them on sale. Obviously, it was destiny to get gold glitter TOMS. When I received them, I was surprised because they have a PLUSH, LEATHER SOLES. On an “arch-support” scale, TOMS falls in between PUMAs (extra support) and Vans (no support). Perfect! I am very obsessed with my luminous feet, and whenever I wear them, I find myself compulsively looking down. I guess I’m afraid that one day I’ll look down, all the glitter will have fallen off, and I will be overcome with clouds and lightning bolts. So far, my feet are still as lustrous as San Diego. (PS- If you decide to get TOMS, don’t believe reviewers on Zappos and Amazon, etc. Like the TOMS website notes, the sneakers fit true to size. Misled, I thought they would run small (one of the reasons why I chose the gold over the silver). On the contrary, they are quite roomy and stretch-out. Yes, the pictures above are of my actual TOMS (and my feet).
2. Recently, I’ve been listening to the Smiths. A lot. Morrissey’s voice is as soothing as those baby stuff animals that play waterfall sound bites. Simile with Morrissey? I just made one.
3. I made diet coke cupcakes for the first time (in a LONG time). Almost a year? I’m not sure. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, you mix a can of diet coke with a box of cake mix. Pour the batter into cupcake sleeves, and bake according to instructions. Voila! Potentially less calories. Except, I put a lot of icing on my cupcakes. And sprinkles. When I used to bake these, I would share them with everyone. Now I have no one to share them with, so I’ll probably end up eating 20+ cupcakes. Womp womp.
4. OH MY GOODNESS. A couple weeks ago, JetPens sent me a yellow orange body, blue ink Zebra Airfit Jell Gel Ink Pen. Since then, I’ve been testing it- doodles and such. As illustrated above, I even *chronicled* every time I used this pen from 10/28-11/6.
It is the best 0.5mm pen that I have ever used, and it is the third best pen that I’ve ever owned.
I usually find 0.5mm to be too thick, but this pen is exceptional. The tip is incredibly precise- no chunky gel blobs at all. Crisp lines all the time. I even subjected the pen to a smiley test (pass), squiggle test (pass), and water-boarding test (SURPRISINGLY, PASS. The ink did not even bleed, despite all the water droplets that I flung at the paper. I included a scan of my water-droplet test results below. The paper was kind of wrinkly, but the ink didn’t even quiver a little. ALSO OF NOTE: I accidentally spilled coffee on my test sheet today, and the ink still held up. What a trooper.)
In additional to performing well, the Zebra Airfit is impeccably designed. Did the name sound suspicious to you? Well, the pen grip contains AIR POCKETS, so your fingers never get sweaty. I even drew a cross-sectional view of the grip! This is the pen’s official description on JetPens:
The Zebra Airfit can be found all over Asia, but it is strangely hard to find in the US. It is one of the more popular pens because of its comfortable rubber grip, binder style clip that allows it to be attached to thicker objects, and ergonomic body shape. This new fine tip 0.5 mm gel Airfit pen gives you smooth writing satisfaction. Like the pilot AirBlanc, the grip also has a layer of air between the rubber grip and the body of the pen to allow heat conduction from your fingers. Perhaps it’s because of the hot weather in Asia, but cool hands seem to be an important factor in Japanese pen design! Yes, we guess this can make a great companion during first time job interviews.
I may not be interviewing for any jobs right now, but sometimes crosswords can be stressful. “___Thurman, ___Thurman, Crap! How come I can’t remember her first name?!” This whole scenario is highly ficitious (GATTACA *is* one of my favorite movies, and I’d never forget Uma), but at the moment I can’t think of any other crossword clue examples. My only complaint in regards to the grip, is that like other rubber grips, it easily attracts dust. Finally, the clip mentioned in the description? It is honestly HUGE. Basically a clothes pin tacked on to a pen. Delightful! JetPens (Available in blue/white/light blue/pink/yellow barrels with blue/black/blue-black/red ink refills, $4.50)
5. Approximately two months ago, S&D interviewed The Bubble Process- A tight poster printing duo that is composed of two males of outstanding moral fiber. Just last week, The Bubble Process released a dazzling new Girl Talk poster. One of the best shows I ever attended was a Girl Talk show the week of Halloween 2xx6, in a shitty/shifty Ithaca bar. If you have never seen him before, I highly recommend that you find tickets (They’re hard to find these days! He is in high demand!). To fully enjoy Girl Talk, you must let yourself get swallowed by the undulating body slamming, and embrace the lovely diaphoresis. It makes the post-Girl Talk extra large pop more satiating. I am infatuated with this poster, because it embodies Girl Talk. I love the juxtaposed gumball machine and crystal ball, and the turban’d man overprinted on the wild purple-people. So visually engaging! I’m enraptured! The Bubble Process, $20
See yesterday’s interview with Jonathan Keller!
So I finagled some currently obsessed info out of JK and made a little picture to accompany the lists!

Currently Obsessed with:
Shrunken Quarters
Envelope-free ATM deposits that print an image of the check on your receipt.
iPhone solitaire (this may more properly belong in the second list)
Tompkins Square Park Dog Run
Grade B Dark Amber maple syrup
Hot Coca-Cola
Laser-cutters & 3d printers
Ongoing obsessions that I am working to reduce:
e-mail, blogs & the internets in general
Myself, specifically my face
Dust
The zeitgeist

Yes, it’s different! I dyed it red and got bangs. Ohhh… you mean with Stickers & Donuts, well, yes, that has changed a little, too. We now have MORE SPACE thanks to my friend and co-adventurer Misa. I realize that now all of my other pages, formatted perfectly to the smaller width, are a little funny now. Also, I now have to blow dry and straighten my bangs. Change always comes with its share of problems.
As for this week’s current obsessions (for other weeks, click here)…

The title of this post is pretty awesome because I AM currently obsessed with Ian Dingman (check out my interview with him, or some selections of his work), but this is a Currently Obsessed post BY Ian Dingman, a Stickers & Donuts first, because so far only Tricia & I have disclosed our current obsessions.
While making the image to go along with Ian Dingman’s obsessions, I signed up for the Social Music Revolution (that’s Last FM’s tagline). I haven’t quite mastered it yet, but so far it seems like a combination of Facebook, Pandora, & iTunes Genius. Moral: With a little practice, things other people are obsessed with, you can become obsessed with, too.
Anyway, you aren’t here to learn about me! Here are Ian’s obsessions, written from his very own fingertips:
From Maria, a note about the fonts I used in the above picture: These are two of my favorite fonts, and I found them free at dafont.com! The handwriting font is Jellyka - Estrya’s Handwriting by Jellyka Nerevan who runs cuttyfruty.com and the header font is Barnes Erc by Eric Wiryanata who runs thunderpanda.com.
Happy Friday! Posts are going to be light and/or non-existent through Tuesday (LSATs / GREs!!!!)! This post is long. Save half of it for Monday? xo

I blame Tricia & Bobby Solomon for the messiness of this post.
First of all, Tricia’s study-supply-heavy currently obsessed post prompted me to write my own study-supply heavy currently obsessed post. (Hopefully, between the two of us, your next study session will be super-productive (and you will gain five pounds).)
Bobby Solomon doesn’t know who I am, but I read his blog & am really obsessed with his desktop wallpaper project. He has twitter (so does Stickers & Donuts!) and commented on Ben Fold’s new album with a song featuring Regina Spektor, which I also love, and in usual internet-fashion I now feel really connected and really creepy.
ANYWAY, right after laying out the images for this post, I discovered this week’s desktop wallpaper featuring Billy Murray on Bobby’s blog, and (instant obsession!) had to squeeze it into my post. Due to a layer error and time constraints, I had only so many choices in reorganization. Alas. Messy.
Anyway, after the jump, long descriptions (procrastination) of the things in the picture. Also, links.
Hello friends! In my very first issue of currently obsessed, I’d like to share some things that I’ve recently been consuming/listening to/lusting for. As you can tell from all the picks, I am in study mode. Non-mechanical #2 pencils? Check! Candy and coffee? Double check! (Note: My productivity is correlated with candy consumption. Legit. Kind of like Felicity’s pre-med roommate and her M&Ms, minus the pre-med part. Or, Michael from the Princess Diaries and HIS M&Ms. ) The Life Aquatic violates this set from being completely study-related (I can only intake a limited amount of David Bowie. Especially when I’m trying to “critically” read.), but this is currently obsessed…so no discrimination allowed. Ciao!

This week’s issue of currently obsessed features more fabulous things that I can’t get enough of this week… but will possibly be tired of next week (or not).
I think this was a good week in Stickers & Donuts land, with lots of fun posts (well, I had fun at least) and sets. How about a round of applause for Tricia who did two spectacular posts this week? I thought her posts were awesome and from the looks of things, so did you! Anyway, here is another small edition of “Currently Obsessed” for your Friday. Have a spectacular weekend!
I’m currently obsessed with the Olympics, among other things:
S&D NEWS ALERT: I’m so excited for a post I’m doing tomorrow about Thomas Allen, who takes amazing photos of books, that I’m conducting an entire art/design Book Week here at Stickers & Donuts. The Thomas Allen post is going to contain some exclusive photos that were not included in the final cut for his work with Oprah Magazine. I’m super-excited about this post and can’t wait to share these pictures with you!
So, Book Week starts tomorrow (see italicized paragraph above) and I hope you stop by! In the meantime, here are a few not-necessarily-art-and-design-related things I am currently obsessed with to help get you through your Sunday.
Sometimes, I get stuck on repeat like a kindergartner who watches the same episode of Blues Clues everyday in a single week. Suddenly, I’m obsessed with movie/artist/tv show/outfit X and I can’t get off of it for a week or two.
