kerouac-clothes-coldplay-princeI have no time for witticisms and preambles! This is going to be short + sweet! I’m a woman on a mission! (If you see less of me this week, it’s all because of Number Five.)

(1) Jack Kerouac’s Invented Game of Fantasy Sports: Read the NY Time article (GO!). This is especially interesting if you are a writer or other creative-type who has an active imagination, even as an adult.

(2) Cute Outfit: Of all of the things I have seen on the internet lately, this outfit has been on my desktop waiting for me to do something with it. All I could do with it was stick it here. I found it on NYLON (which generally does a shitty job of linking to anything helpful, and which I will follow suit in in the interest of time).

(3) Twitter & Threadless: They have teamed up to turn your Tweets into Twats. Er. I mean, shirts. Just link up your twitter account with the Twitter/Threadless conglomerate, and you can nominate the tweets of yourself or your friends for T-shirt fame.

(4) Free Coldplay CD: Ahhh, I was skeptical as to the quality of something so audaciously free, but I actually like some of the live versions better than the studios. My favorite song is “Death Will Never Conquer” (in a rare change of events, the drummer, Will Champion, sings this folksy ditty). Literally, I have been playing through this + Tricia’s Lilly Allen recommendation for three days straight.

(5) The Dictionary: I am reading it. For real. Cover to cover. Six+ hours a day. And taking notes. It is exhausting. (I am scheduled to finish in one month if I continue at this rate.)

(6) The Little Prince: It’s true, as a lover of children’s books I probably should have read The Little Prince sometime long before last week. You’ll be happy to know that now that I have read it, I understand why everyone is obsessed! Such a lovely, deep story. (Go flip through it on Google Books if you haven’t read it!) A little internet research lead to the discovery that James Dean (I heart him also, btw) also loved the book, and had many passages memorized.

Ugly, But I Like It

ugly-but-i-like-it

My fashion sense might be defined by an obsession with merchandise that is “ugly / pretty.” What’s “uglypretty” you ask? Well, first of all, I bought a UNITARD this year (how impractical is that?! as many have said, to pee is a pain in the arse). So, uglypretty is when you know that by all standards of logic that something is ugly, you could probably write a paper on why it’s ugly, but you are drawn to it despite all logical reasoning. Alright, there is some logical reasoning for me, and part of it is that I’m drawn to bright colors (yum, lime green!) like a tv addict to the season premiere of LOST.

1. TIGHT TIGHTS (Celeste Stein Designs, Bamaku Pattern $19)
I am obsessed with the god-awful pattern on these tights! They are an awkwardly brilliant combination of fantastic colors and geometric designs. How yum would this be (did I just say that? god, I’ve been reading too many teen fashion magazines) with a solid yellow skirt, or, for the more uglypretty daring, a PATTERNED SKIRT.

2. MADE FROM AN EARLY 90s COUCH? (Urban Outfitters, Brushed Skirt, $48)
So, before my dentist’s office redecorated, I am almost positive that my youthful self knew that, very soon, those chairs which were upholstered in fabric JUST LIKE THIS had to go. Little did I know that I would later want a skirt made out of ALMOST THE SAME MATERIAL.

3. THIS ONE TAKES ME BACK (Disney Store, Minnie Mouse Sweatshirt for Adults, ON SALE FOR $7)
First of all, I probably had this sweater in first grade. Second of all, it is turquoise. Third of all, I love Disney. FOURTH OF ALL, I love sweatshirts (cozy loungewear for the stay-at-homer) that I feel cute in, even if it’s uglycute. I had the brief flash that I would like to be employed JUST SO I COULD PURCHASE THIS SWEATSHIRT. I LOVE IT. It doesn’t help that it’s only seven dollars… right at my fingertips…!!!

4. WHERE’S WALDO? (George Terrific, where is he sloppy joe shirt)
Okay, what’s with those really round “beads” that resemble…. Also, it’s huge. Also, GIANT STRIPES. And not just any stripes, red stripes! I think I saw these in a children’s book somewhere… And yet, I could almost guarantee that if I wore this, no one else would be wearing it. UNIQUE!

5. MMM YUMMY (Threadless, The Things I’ve Swallowed, ON SALE FOR $6)
Do you like sea food? Well, you can SEE your food everyday when you wear this colorful t-shirt full of ugly things.

6. 80s BARBIE? (American Apparel, Printed Nylon Leggings, $42)
These are so fun, a fab choice for a casual party. The little flecks of color look a little like SPRINKLES, so maybe you can wear them to a funky tea party with a kind of Alice in Wonderland theme where you have cupcakes with your tea.

Threadless: It’s Not Just a Tube!

Sep 4, 2008 Author: Maria | Filed under: Graphics

So, yes, I’ve posted approximately seven times about Threadless, the t-shirt, and now print-making, company of great graphic design, and, having recently received my Spoilt print in the mail (yay!), I had to post again.

The prints are thrilling because I’m not an everyday T-shirt-wearer, but I just love all of the designs on the T-shirts. The only real problems with my print are: (1) I wish it were more giant, (2) I wish I could find a frame that works with it. Alas.

Anyway, one of the most fabulous parts about receiving my print was seeing which number print I was getting (they have runs of 250). I believe I was number 90-something, so that means over one-third have been sold. Secondly, the print came in a fabulously thick and huge tube.

Luckily, the people at Threadless knew that we lovers-of-graphic-design, having a general affinity for creativity, would wonder what to do with this monster-of-a-tube. Thus, they provided the above insert: “It’s Not Just a Tube! 12 tubular uses you might not have considered” (with art by Olly Moss, who recently posted this Wilde at Heart design, which I love, on his blog, and is the artist of my beloved Spoilt print!)

The tube-ideas include everything from “Ninja Sword” to “Huge Glass” (my personal favorites are “Robot Arms” and “Hamster Cannon”). Also, the bottom warning is spectacular: “Many of these uses are not safe or possible.” Though I would really like to give “Giant Spit Baller” a try…

Update 7/4/08 9:15AM: Threadless prints have been reduced to $19.

Quick! Sales on beautiful things!

Aug 29, 2008 Author: Maria | Filed under: Graphics

Major sales in the design world this week, some of them super-amazing and ending today (McSweeney’s!!!).

  1. Life of Mystery poster: “Life holds plenty of mystery, but it often seems like the wrong kind of mystery. Life’s mysteries are either depressing — why am I never satisfied, or what did I do to deserve this — or they’re bland — will I stain this shirt by accident?” But this poster is full of neither of those mysteries, instead it expounds upon the mysteries of ornamental keys, ghosts, & darting eyes! It’s the coolest Tiny Showcase print to hit the streets! And, it’s not even tiny (22×28 plus border for framing), AND it’s cheaper than the usual $20 prints, at only $12 (shipping is about $3)! It’s well designed & very funny, so checkout the poster details (upclose pictures! yay!) on the Tiny Showcase page.
  2. Old issues of McSweeney’s are only FIVE DOLLARS until the end of the day today! If you do not buy Issue 13 & 19 (the comic book issue and the issue that comes in a cigar box with little war pamphlets), at the least, you are making a huge life mistake! These literary “magazines” have fold-out covers (Issues 13 & 23), mini-books (Issues 19 & more), come as a stack of mail (Issue 17), or have, for no reason in particular, a little comb tucked inside its cover (Issue 16). I may or may not have ordered nine of these (shipping was $10 for 9).
  3. Okay, so maybe I’ve mentioned this threadless poster (Spoilt) several times before, but I just thought you should know all threadless prints are $25 this week rather $35 (shipping is $10, sad, but the sale certainly helps!). Shirts are $12 right now, too!

Have a WONDERFUL three day weekend and make sure to visit Tricia’s amazing school supply posts before you do your Labor Day shopping!

Villains, Pizza, Olympics, Socks

Aug 22, 2008 Author: Maria | Filed under: Other

I think this was a good week in Stickers & Donuts land, with lots of fun posts (well, I had fun at least) and sets. How about a round of applause for Tricia who did two spectacular posts this week? I thought her posts were awesome and from the looks of things, so did you! Anyway, here is another small edition of “Currently Obsessed” for your Friday. Have a spectacular weekend!

I’m currently obsessed with the Olympics, among other things:

  • This “League of Cliche Evil Supervillans” graphic from threadless now comes in a large print version in addition to the T-shirt version.
  • Pizza. Yes, just plain old pizza. It’s so good. I had forgotten.
  • The Christmas Tree Shop (especially the stores on Cape Cod). Cute home goods (and more) for ridiculously cheap. A super-bargain shoppers dreamland!
  • Olympics gymnastics. So dramatic. So much flipping! Aren’t you sad it’s over?
  • I watched all of the Michael Phelps’ Olympic races. EIGHT golds in ONE Olympics?! Close, nail biting races — some of the best Olympic moments I’ve ever seen. (See the now famous “miracle finish” in Phelps’ second to last race.)
  • Yesterday, I bought a five pack of really BRIGHT colored socks for $10. I also bought delightfully opaque, and actually comfortable, tights in purple and in green. They have so much footwear this season (at least at the NYC H&M near Penn Station). If you need to re-wardrobe your feet, this is the place to go.
